It also doesn\u2019t hurt that the Spider is actually more of a targa reminiscent of the transcendent<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Lotus Elise. According to its maker, the Spider weighs just 22 pounds more than the coupe, which will still leave it on the good side of 2500 pounds according to our scales. But industry custom dictates that it\u2019s time for a midcycle refresh, and so BMW tasked its designers with coming up with a few ideas for the 2015 model year. The results prove that it was difficult to improve upon its near-perfect shape. The changes are subtle: BMW removed one vertical slat (nine remain) from its signature kidney grilles, full-LED headlights are now standard, and the fog lights feature three distinct LED units. Otherwise, there are a few new colors and wheel choices. The Bolt, which promises 200 miles of range and which will sell for roughly $38,000 before tax credits, could also prove to be a bummer for the upcoming Tesla Model 3 and the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>BMW i3. But there are further welcome changes: The seven-speed torque-converter automatic shifts more quickly, and in manual mode there are no automatic shifts\u2014not even at kickdown or redline. The exhaust system operates with less back pressure, which adds a noticeable exhaust rumble and enhances power.
